This was my go at the Picturehouse screenplay competition in 2016, on the theme of “Belonging”. Having had a go at writing a Doctor Who script (will put that up soon), I was sort of familiar with the screenplay format, and thought I’d give it a go.
Kicked around a few ideas on “Belonging”, before hitting on an idea I’ve got for a Pink and October (again, coming soon) story, working title: “Psychics Anonymous”.
What you find here is what I’m calling my “Director’s Cut” (or should that be “Author’s Cut”?) as the word count limit for the competition meant I had to excise a large chunk of the description, which I think diminished the imagery in the script. On a positive note though, it did force me to condense three characters into one, which I think makes the story more powerful and human – sometimes limits can be creative as well as stifling.
Anyway, I’ve been meaning to fold all the descriptive stuff back into the tighter story structure for a while now, resulting in the “Director’s Cut” 🙂
I am really proud of this piece and it still moves me to moist eyes when I re-read it.
I hope you like it too.

PS – if there are any short film-makers out there interested in making this, I’d love to see it realised!
