Cetacean researchers off the Newfoundland coast are trying to explain the recent disappearance of a pod of minke whales they have been tracking for the past 6 months.

Dr Thor Nordrum of the Oslo Cetacean Foundation, who is heading up the research team, said, “Our current best working hypothesis is that the pod has dived to a depth we had previously not anticipated, and perhaps the RF transceivers we are utilising to track them with have reached, and perhaps passed the tolerances for depth they were built to.”

Dr Nordrum is confident the whales will resurface eventually.  “Fifteen tons of ocean going mammal does not just vanish into thin air,” was his final comment on the matter.
